DO YOU NOW... why there are so many great middle generation jazz musicians in the Czech Republic? According to statistics, Prague has the largest portion professional jazz musicians per 100 inhabitants in all of Europe. During the former communist regime, jazz was in a sense tolerated, and therefore developed similarly as the music of the oppressed black working class in the U.S. Then in the sixties melting of the regime, tha jazz and jazz-rock scene became very popular in both Czechoslovakia and Poland, but it's continuation was interrupted by the following military intervention. Slowly this music has been reintroduced, but just in its instrumental form to avoid problems with sometimes controversial texts of jazz songs. This is one of the reasons why Czech jazz musicians are so technically equipped, and why there is a shortage of singers. See you at the Jazz Republic!
